The Kgetleng River Local Municipality CANNOT even deliver the most basic service like uninterrupted daily clean water. The electricity infrastructure is near collapse with constant regular days long interruptions. Some parts of the towns the streets are completely destroyed or disintegrating due to lack of maintenance or proper repairs.
No raises in tariffs until the municipality sort these issues out permanently.

We pay rates and taxes, and yet no service delivery happens with municipalities wasting money, misappropriating it, or plainly just stealing the money. This means that we as citizens bear the brunt of municipal fat cats living luxury lives while we suffer. Citizens are over-taxed as it is. We need some way to ease this unfair burden on citizens.

I strongly oppose any further increases in municipal property rates and local taxes at this time. South Africans are already overburdened by multiple layers of taxation and are struggling to recover from the severe economic impacts of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Any additional municipal rate or tax hikes will exacerbate financial hardship, harm household budgets, and impede economic recovery.

Municipalities awarding themselves generous pay increases while continuing to raise rates is unacceptable and fosters public resentment. The Municipal Property Rates Act provides mechanisms for national intervention where local rates materially and unreasonably prejudice economic activity. It is entirely within the powers of the Minister responsible for local government, with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance, to impose a freeze on municipal rates in the interest of national economic policy.

We call on the Ministers, National Treasury, and CoGTA to immediately freeze all municipal rates and tax increases until South Africa achieves meaningful economic recovery, restores employment levels, and ensures municipalities are fiscally responsible. South Africans cannot afford further financial strain while facing deteriorating municipal services and economic uncertainty.

We need to streamline the municipalities. They are fat overfed entities who are corrupt, inefficient and overstaffed.
The municipalities need to cut wasteful expenditure and root out corruption to make their budgets and deliver on service, not keep on calling on the tax payers to fund their mismanagement, inaptitude and spending sprees.

We are already beyond the Laffer curve. Rates and taxes are too high with little to no service delivery or maintenance and failed infrastructure.

The Municipality has no right to get any increase whatsoever. Why? Because the roads are crumbling before our eyes. Because road repairs look like dog poo and dissolve even quicker. Because of poor water quality and regular interruptions. Because streetlights don't work. Because the city is so dirty, it is un utter disgrace.
